During the time school's been out I actually was down in Maryland competing in the 12th International Submarine Race (ISR). Our submarine is called Umptysquatch VI, this as the 6th time we competed in the race. It takes place in a navy basin every 2 years.
Our submarine is a 2-person sub, one person in the front and one person in the back. Both people are pedaling. The person in the front of the sub is pedaling and controlling the sub with the front control fins. The person in the back is actually facing towards the back of the submarine, he is also pedaling and controlling the variable pitch system for the propellers.
In the race we were 1 of 3 high schools that competes and the rest were colleges from around the world. It is really fun looking at everyone else's subs and watch what the can do underwater. For example, the was a german team, there sub was called Rivershark... instead of being propelled by propellers, it had two dolphin tales.... one on the top and one on the bottom. When someone was pedaling, the gearbox was turning a wheel that made the tales go up and down creating thrust. It was soooo awesome to look at.
In the end, our team came in 2nd place for speed in a 2-person submarines(our speed was 2.58 knots). We also got first place for best design report. It was an amazing experience!!!
